There is a popular saying in the Black community,” Black Don’t Crack”, which speaks to how important Melanin is, that black and brown pigment occurring in our hair, skin, and eyes, that main ingredient for the natural tan and younger appearance the world absolutely loves! According to recent research, maintaining a youthful appearance is important to 66% of Black female consumers. This starts with our health, which has become and will continue to be a top priority in African American households in 2020 and beyond.
Women of color are paying attention to their health more than ever, as 74% of Black women are eating right, and 53% of Black women admit that they follow a regular exercise routine, according to research. Women of color have long been underrepresented within the health & wellness industries. Many images of health influencers, fitness instructors, and meditation enthusiasts do not look like those with the power to spend more dollars within the industry. Today, this gap is being filled with diverse wellness leaders who are creating innovative ways to bring self-care, wellness, and home fitness to new audiences. Until mainstream companies catch on, African Americans are leading the way for inclusivity.
Examples of African Americans closing this marketing gap to African American consumers are, Stacey Johnson and Jasmine Johnson, co-founders of Black Zen, a free online meditation guide and weekly podcast, created to remove the social and financial barriers that restrict black and brown communities from discovering the benefits of meditation. Millennial influencers are also making a dent in the world of health and fitness by introducing new ways to work out and meditate Brittany Floyd-Mayo, also known as Trap Yoga Bae, has introduced yoga to African Americans by transforming it into a party atmosphere drawing in hundreds of consumers interested in wellness. These are just a few of the individuals creating platforms to spread health and wellness disciplines to underserved and underrepresented sectors.
