My Black is Beautiful, at least that’s what they told me. But I am not convinced as I stroll the makeup counters filling my basket with multiple shades of foundations, concealers and powders to eventually find that match for my skin tone. Although there seems to be major developments within the beauty industry – makeup, skin care products, etc. there are still gaps to fill to cover the many different skin tones of African American women – therefore, won-dering if our Black is as Beautiful as it seems! Black Women have cornered the beauty market, ring-ing up $54 million of the $63 million total industry spend in 2017. According to research, Black shop-pers are making significant investments in personal appearance products, such as grooming aids ($127 million out of $889 million), skin care preparations, and hair care ($465 million out of $3 billion).
“Black Women Are Making Strides in the Beauty industry”
Physical appearance is a major point of cultural pride to the African American woman. Our skin, our nails, and our overall look is a reflection of one’s identity and a form of self-expression. The Fenty Cosmetic effect, owned by singer Rihanna took the world by storm by releasing over 40 shades of foundation for women of color. Soon after that, our melanin became a formula for financial success to many beauty corporations around the world. Dismissing a culture throughout media advertising for so many years has opened the door for African American entrepreneurs to fill those gaps, where major manufacturers are lagging behind in developing beauty products for all women of color. The proof is in the pudding, black women are looking for the right shades, no more ashy, grey, yellow or red tones for our luxurious skin, PERIOD!
Black Women are making strides in the Beauty industry, diversifying the images we see daily. Celebrity Influencers who have contributed to this change include Jackie Anina, Pat McGrath, Myleik Teele and Maria Borges to name a few. Beauty has become a major component on the exhibit floor at the Black Women’s Expo. This is where our women of color come and engage with beauty companies looking for brand new products that enhance their beauty and keep their skin healthy.
